Accelerate Reader Program (AR) Read the following section for more details about AR in our classroom.
We are using Accelerated Reader to aid your student in reading growth. AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading. Your child picks a book at his level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what he read.) AR gives us feedback based on the quiz results, which I can then use to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
Tracking AR in the Classroom
I use a class chart to help students keep track and monitor their goal. They have a chart in their Red folder as well with all of the AR information (AR level and Points Goal) as well as a section for them to keep track of their progress toward their goal. I divided 100% of the goal by the 8 weeks in the grading period and give the kids a small percentage to shoot for every week. For example, on the first week of the 8-weeks the students need to make 12% of their goal. Then the next week, they need to make 24% of their goal. I call this their checkpoint. If they meet the checkpoints every week, it will be easier to make their goal by the end of the grading period.
AR Tests
AR keeps track of the percentage correct on AR tests. In order for a student to grow as a reader, the percentage correct needs to stay above 85%. If the percentage falls below 85%, the student needs help in comprehension while reading. I encourage test taking on Tuesday & Friday's, however a student may take a test if book read 3 or more times total.
Goal Setting and Data
At the beginning of every 8-weeks, your student will take the STARR Test. The STARR Test is a computerized reading assessment that uses computer-adaptive technology. Questions continually adjust to your child’s responses. If the child’s response is correct, the difficulty level is increased. If the child misses a question, the difficulty level is reduced. The test uses multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 20 minutes. This test gives us your child’s reading level. From there, the goal is set depending on the minutes of reading expected daily.
